Manukau Live Steamers meeting next week - so hopefully we can have a boiler bashing session soon after these parts are approved by the boiler committee!

Train Detection Trials Part 1

Been experimenting for some time with various designs for train detection. Given all our track is welded and we have dual guage, normal track circuits are not possible.

After talking through my latest design a couple of weeks ago, and lamenting the complexity of manufacture & installation - Bill had a brainwave and together with Peter and I - we soon came up with a vertical drill hole design that is both simple and quick to install shown here. we have installed one on a raised rail section for monitoring over the next couple of months to see how it copes with the weather and have a couple of potential modifications if rust in the hole becomes a problem.

Signal system Progress

Sunday 14th April - we had a full compliment of crew with Georges return from the Sth Island. Got stuck into getting Air and Water services down to the signalbox, and while the trench was open we took the opportunity to lay signal cables around the turntable leads area. Rod started work in the shed on the new Double Slip for the Signalbox area.

Peter's Baldwin Progress

Peter has been busy building the boiler for his new Balwin Locomotive. Almost ready for boiler inspection before the first Silver Soldering Session.

New Arrival to WCR

Some of you may know Tony Howker. Ex Westinghouse Rail in the UK, he was THE Signalling guru at The Great Cockrow Railway near London. Tony has since retired to Melbourne and his grandson James lives here in New Zealand and has become a regular at the Winter Creek in the last year.

Tony is moving one of his locomotives - Britannia -  to the Winter Creek for James to learn how to care for and drive. We also hope to see Tony regularly here with his Grandson enjoying Steamups together.

Here is a photo of Britannia with Tony's other loco a Black Five which I  had the pleasure of driving last year. Photo was taken at the main station, Cambelltown Miniature Railway, Melbourne where Tony is a regular driver.

Signal System Design

The intial design of the system was done by Noel a while ago and utilises current signalling practice. I have recently updated it to reflect the track changes going on at the Junction and kept with the modern signalling practice.

However - I havent felt totally comfortable with this and it has recently become clear why. My memories of New Zealand rail are mostly rural and date back as far as the 1960s at the end of the steam era, so I have begun researching what it would take to backdate the system to an NZR 1960s - steam changeover period. Ken Ashford of Kiwi Rail - a long time employee and expert has offered to help get it right. (Ken also has a signalling museam in Hamilton).

 

So here is the diagram as it stands for now, but watch it change as I get more info from Ken.
