The times they are a changing

Published by Admin at 3:36 PM under

The only constant in life is change, and with that sentiment - I am thinking seriously of closing this website and moving to facebook.

Why?

For some time now - every post I put here I have been also posting something similar on facebook to the NZ Model Engineers site or similar. There I get dozens of comments and hundreds of veiws within hours.

I used to get email from all around the world from people who were watching this site, but now that is very rare.

I still subscribe to 7+ngm and Live Diesel Yahoo groups - but have watched them wither from hundreds of posts per day to nothing for weeks.

The times - they are a-changing.

Should I keep this site? send me an email with your opinion.

Feb Steam up cancelled

Published by Admin at 2:36 PM under Operating Days

Apologies one and all, but the fire-ban season is upon us, and we will have to postpone Feb steam up from the 7th - until we get some rain. It is just too risky right now, and railway funds wont cover the cost of fighting a bush fire!

For those that may not be aware - living in a rural area requires me to carry rural fire insurance. Law says that any fire in the countryside can be charged across ALL landowners in the general area as a levy. Insurance will not cover us if the fire was started on our property and we could be liable to court cases from all other landowners who could be levied. This is in addition to any punitive damages the court may hand down for not having a fire permit. A bit higher chance of damage and liability than our cousins in the city.

Currently the area is in 'restricted' mode - which means no open or contained fires without a permit - and I expect we will go to a total fire ban within the next few days

Will advise new date asap.

Here are a few of the photos taken during our steam up last weekend. We had several visiting locomotives and it was a great day for all.

Work down at the junction.

Published by Admin at 12:34 PM under Track Construction

Busy Finalising the drainage and leveling dirt down at the junction in preparation for the brick retaining wall with Jim and Noel. Here is a before/After shot taken from roughly the same place to show the extent of the work. Note the relative position of the signal box - how much the embankment has been extended to the right. First photo was taken 12 October, the Second was taken this afternoon.

Events Calendar Summer 2014/15

Published by Admin at 11:28 AM under Operating Days | Train Advice Notices

Sorted out a bit of a calendar of events over the crazy days of Christmas I will add to this post if there are any amendments.

Tuesday 9th - Noel and I will be in the shed Tuesday evening looking at the Brit's oil pump.

Sunday Dec 14th - Working/Poss Steam Up - Be nice to do a biut of maintenance in the morning, George will be making a state visit in the afternoon.

Saturday 20th Dec - Working Bee. Last chance to tidy the little things before Boxing day. Be nice to complete the track guage checking programme, and fix the couple of issues recently identified with No.24 and the Brit. Maybe erect one of Peter's signals on trial? Also be good to improve temporary watering facilities.

Friday Dec 26th - Boxing Day - Members Family picnic day - BYO those Christmas left overs, deck chairs and a bottle along for a lawn picnic and a lazy day with a few trains running. Relatives and friends who are staying with you are also welcome - I'll rely on you all to host your own group - reminding all of the safety rules etc.

Saturday Jan 10th - Steam up day - Will be hosting John Heald and Bryan Kincaid. Grant said he will make a special effort to be up too as he is keen to see how John's loco performs. I will likely be hosting a couple of other Kiwi Rail staff as well. Let me know if there is anyone you would like to invite.

Saturday Jan 24th - Working Bee. Details tba. Given this is also a long weekend - could sneak in a second working day - or an impromtu steam up depending on the mood of those available?

Saturday Feb 7 - Steam Up? - I've put this in the calender because I recall Tony intending to be in New Zealand at this time. Friday is Waitangi day, so a long weekend, may be better to move, but will confirm when I understand Tony's plans.
