Trackwork & General from July 2012

Published by Chris Draper at 5:50 PM under Steam Locomotives | Track Construction

July has been a bit wet and cold to do much outside, but when the pot belly stove is fired up and food smells are wafting through the shed - we dont mind!

Custom Springs for the Diesel

Published by Chris Draper at 4:29 PM under Diesel Locomotives

Suspension was always going to be tricky for my diesel, but luckily I found a company that took all the hard work away. Spring Specialists here in Auckland who custom make any spring from cellphone keypad to heavy duty truck springs.

I specified the diameter had to be just less than the 24mm pocket size, the free length should be 70mm and when compressed to 50mm long it should be supporting a design weight of 30kg.

From that information they calculated the spring wire size (3.5mm), and recommended a diameter of 20mm so the spring had some space to flex as it compressed as well as allowing for the side to side movement of the axleboxes in the horns (up to 5mm each way). They could not have been more helpful.

They appologised for charging a setup fee for such a small order (20) and produced them in 2 days for $9 each. Great value in my book.

When I turned up to collect them today they also showed me part of their extensive 'odds and ends' collection they have and welcomed me back to delve into it should I find the need.

Great Service from a local company.

Tony's Britannia Arrives safely in NZ

Published by Chris Draper at 6:17 PM under Steam Locomotives

UPDATE: While Chris was away working hard in Wellington. The usual team assembled and made a start on the inspection of Tony's Britannia. Some interesting shots and a caption competition near the end. Just what was Noel doing with that torch?

UPDATE: Loco uncrated and safe on WCR rails 27 May. (Photo added to Gallery)

Truck arrived and unloaded Tony's Britannia today - in two pieces - Fortunately it had been shipped that way!

Tony arrives in 10 days time and I am sure we will all have some fun preparing her for a new life at the WCR.

Milestone for the DFT Diesel Project

Published by Chris Draper at 8:21 AM under Diesel Locomotives

Now I'm off the crutches, making some progress on the big Diesel.

Got the wheels and bearings pressed onto the axles, and took the trucks for a test run through the sharpest curves. They performed perfectly. A great day indeed.

Published by Chris Draper at 8:15 AM under Steam Locomotives

This year we have two boilers to make - Yesterday found the usual suspects in the shed for a full days Silver Soldering Session.

UPDATE: Second session of boiler making was held yesterday 27 May. No photos to hand of Peter's tube nest, but added photos of Rod's Boiler being worked on.

Published by Chris Draper at 2:07 PM under Operating Days

Sunday 26 Feb was a cracker of a day. Steve and Peter were in steam, and the tram got quite a workout too with various visitors and neighbours popping in for a look throughout the day.
